Introduction to the Alaskan Malamute Owning an Alaskan Malamute is an experience in itself. If trained right, they will be the best of dogs. An untrained Alaskan Malamute is the worst of dogs. If you allow them to get bored or leave them alone for very long, they get very destructive. A beautiful yard will be like a war zone in very little time. Don’t ever leave an Alaskan Malamute in your home alone. It will look like a tornado went through it. Don’t get me wrong. If you train your Alaskan Malamute puppy from the start and continue to spend time with him everyday, you will have the best dog imaginable. We can not stress enough to train, train, and train your puppy from the start. I learned all of this through first hand experience. Trial and error. Each Alaskan Malamute has their own unique personality. But most love to howl, sing, and grumble. It’s their way of talking and it can get quite loud at times. Especially if they are left alone for long periods of time and get lonely or bored. But they also do this when they are playing with you or each other. I personally love to hear them howl, but not everyone likes to hear it. Keep in mind if you live in a large neighborhood, this is something your neighbors will be hearing everyday also. Alaskan Malamutes are very dedicated to their pack. Which you as their family will be their pack. Malamutes love people but are very aggressive toward other dogs not in their pack and smaller animals such as cats, rabbits and chickens. With all of that said, I don’t have a problem out of the four Malamutes that I got as puppies. I trained them to be tolerant of our cats, rabbits and chickens. Each time I got a new puppy, I would introduce him to the pack slowly. The one Malamute I got as an adult will try to get to the smaller animals every chance he gets. So once again every thing goes back to training your puppy. Alaskan Malamutes do not make good guard dogs. Although their size and the wolf like appearance is intimidating to most people, they are very people friendly. If a guard dog is what you are wanting, you need to look for a different breed of dog. An Alaskan Malamute is more apt to jump on you and lick you to death before they would harm you.
